Seeds of Memory group Exhibition | The Jerusalem Biennale 2024

Curator: Elizabeta Zaidner

The artist uses memories as tangible raw materials. From moments, experiences, objects, and images from the past, she weaves her work. Five artists: five pieces, five memories, five techniques. Pencil sketch, acrylic paint, monotype print, collage with drawing, and mixed techniques—all are expressed in these works. Each material and technique has its own mode of both remembering and being remembered. The works invite us to approach and observe. Each line is significant, full of character. The patches construct and deconstruct the image. This is attentive art, the feminine ability to see a seemingly small thing in all of its power.
Yael Boverman-Attas never met her grandfather. He perished in the Holocaust when her mother was two years old. She knew his face only from small black-and-white photographs. The series “Fragmentation of Memory,” comprises prints she made of his portrait and that of her mother. In printmaking—a technique good at remembering—since the image remains on the plate, image after image can be produced, and the work is perpetuated. In this way they approach and meet—her mother and grandfather—and the missing memory can be created. In contrast with the distinct likeness of her mother, those of her grandfather seem to dissolve and become almost abstract, a tenuous memory.
